If we didn't take a lot of things for granted we'd be nervous wrecks. For example: we take it for granted that the earth will keep rolling around giving us day and night as it traverses its orbit around the sun. We take it for granted that when we go to sleep at night we will wake up in the morning.
We take it for granted - if we're in good health - that we can eat, drink, and go to the toilet. Also, that we can see, hear, touch, taste and smell things. There are a myriad things we take for granted. But if we're reasonably informed, educated and aware, we realize that although we take these things for granted they can be lost or taken away. But to worry inordinately about such losses would detract from the joy in our lives.
What are the reasons we take things for granted? Continuing experience that they can be relied upon unless something completely unexpected happens.
Again, a very astute answer. We can however, decide to change and begin to be grateful for those things we now take for granted!
Sometimes we forget the little things. They become forgotten, little things in life that we shouldn't. We don't always mean to, but they just seem to dissipate into the background.
We take so many things for granted because we are a spoiled society who has to have it easy and right now. Take drive thru, some get infuriated if they have to wait a few minutes. I recommend to go without the luxuries we are provided with every day, for one day. Go without electricity and see how it humbles you.
Great answer to a great question. Going without is a very humbling experience. Also, travel to a third world country. You'll see who's passing us on the way up as we continue our downward spiral due to greed, arrogance and complacency.
My belief is basically the same as Tom Tusitala's. I take my wifes love for granted; that doesn't mean that I don't do my best to be a good husband and basically spoil her. But, I'd hate like hell to be continually worrying about the security of our relationship. I do believe there are things that we shouldn't take for granted. However, I do hope that the sun will continue to rise in the East and the pull of gravity will continue!!

M, here's one thing I"m not taking for granted - your "keep reading" link to your hub How are you getting the link feature when writing in the comment section? I understand you need the url, but highlighting and right clicking doesn't work for me.
There's an interesting "other" connotation to "take for granted". When interpreting for deaf students, I tried to figure out how to translate this idiom. I called my interpreter friend. She said, "Well, Dan (her husband) takes me for granted so much that I thought of how I'd sign that to him. I came up with this sequence of signs," she continued, " that would express that phrase to Dan if I had to sign it." "Well, how WOULD you sign it to him?" I asked. Her sad reply was: "You...Think...Me...Nothing". (I would love to hear how other languages translate this English idiom or what idioms do other languages have for that concept.) The point is that my friend's interpretation actually does apply. We go to drive-in window and get our food in seconds and think it's just nothing. We look at a daisy and gloss over it's intricacies,
thinking it's really nothing really special. NOT taking things for granted requires concentrated effort, and gives us back a sort of secret, silent joy .
Because the Need or Desire has been Fulfilled into a gratifying condition. Once conditioned to that fulfillment, it is accepted, processed, and integrated to a secure comfort zone. However, if it is taken away, it is no longer taken for granted.

Here's my example. My husband left this morning on a five-day fishing trip with his buddies. I honestly am happy for him going. But I was annoyed that he spent the last week packing, buying a new fishing rod, really getting into the whole thing (basically extending the time "away" well...
